Gun buying advice...

I am a long time lurker here and am finally posting and asking for advice in buying a gun...in perticular an AK-47.

I currently own 2...a WASR-10 (in really good shape, never had a problem) and a SAR-1. I desire to own another AK and have about 500 bucks to spend. Here are the 2 choices I am thinking about...

#1. Use funds to buy an Saiga unconverted, then save funds for a few months to convert it. I can get one for around 500 here.

#2. There are a few other higher end AK's here (800-1000 buck range) that I really like. I was thinking about trading in my WASR-10 to the gun store and with the money I have saved buy something nicer.

I like my WASR-10, but I am stuck between having another AK and over the next months making it into a good gun, or just trading it in (I know it is bottom of the barrel) towards something nicer. Advice anyone? Thanks ahead of time!

What "higher-end" AK are you looking at? Is it really better or just more expensive? There are some that are put together with TLC and fine attention to detail, but do they perform any better or shoot better? Will they have higher demand come resale time? These are questions you might ask.

I own a few Arsenals with milled receivers that I like, but they are now overpriced in the market. I don't know if I would pay what they are getting for them. But, they are nice and if that is what you want...go for it. FWIW, Lancaster makes a nice AK, too.

Many people own the WASR 10s and like them just fine. If the front sights are straight, the mags fit without excessive wobble, and the rifle functions and shoots okay, you are in business.

As far as the Saiga, I would leave it the way it is. I own a few and prefer the rifle stock. They are better shooters than most AKs I have encountered. If you must have a pistol grip, get one of the Tapco T6 stocks. You can then legally use the US-made Surefire magazines.
